The Adventures of Manjiro
Manjiro-Logo-215x300
By Rob Redei

Originally commissioned by the Rosenbach Museum and Library, this musical for young children chronicles the adventures of Manjiro Nakahama, a Japanese boy who is shipwrecked and rescued by an American whaler in 1841, making him the first Japanese person to set foot in America. It was inspired by Manjiro Nakahama’s Hyosen Kiryaku, a manuscript created in his own hand when he returned to Japan from his travels in 1851. Full of fun songs that are accessible yet challenging, it is a musical that will keep your audience and actors enthralled, while teaching some important lessons in history and friendship. This musical has the additional benefit of allowing the entire cast to be on stage as a sort of “Greek Chorus” for the duration of the show.
